The Weird Way I Played Volleyball Can Help You Succeed As A Creator

(Without having to play this game)

\"\"/

I was about 14 or 15 years old.

With a few friends, we were into volleyball at school. So we often stayed after the class to play between us.

We were the weirdos, not the winners of the popularity contest most of our classmates were playing at that age.

But we were happy like that and embracing fully our weirdness when playing volleyball.

Because we didn’t follow the rules. Or not totally.

The One Rule

The golden rule in our little tribe was simple: catch and play all the balls.

When I say all, I mean all. Even the ones completely out.

We would run outside the court to catch them, even if we had to throw ourselves on the (hard) floor).

We were wild.

But this is not about telling you to embrace your uniqueness as a creator, I already wrote about that.

This is about something I forgot until today.

Focus Shifting

See, the way we played was different, but not only externally.

Yes, we were looking even more like weirdos and people didn’t understand why we would hurt ourselves to get a ball obviously out.

Inside, we were winning. All the time.

Because of this one thing: our aim was to play. Not to win.

We were fully diving into the game for itself. Becoming one with the ball as much as possible: we felt like superheroes. And it didn’t matter how many points we marked.

The victory was already ours at the first second of the game.

We played what

Simon Sinek

would call “the infinite game”. You can’t lose when you play this game. You always win.

The Infinite Creator

That’s what I want to feel again: no playing for the win, but winning because I play.

This is a totally different game and a much more enjoyable one.

And you know what happens when you do something with joy? You get better, you attract people because you are being genuine.

Especially on social media where everybody seems to be using templates, applying the “secrets” sold for a solid amount of money by gurus.

Being authentic and not in a fake way where you are being self-conscious and manipulative.

Outro

My friends, here’s time to ask you a question: are you ready to join the weirdos? the misfits? The ones who create the rules instead of following them?

It’s going to be hard and you might get a few bruises on the way. But it will be fun I promise. And we will be victorious, from day 1.

We only have to make this decision firmly and say: “Fuck it!”

We only have to catch those balls. All of them.

Let’s play forever.

Be great,

Frank
